Technology is not only a byproduct or an application of scientific research; it is also a stimulus to revise and broaden our knowledge, improving our scientific models and updating methods. Most of the classical fields of research, including the medical sciences, the social sciences, agriculture and veterinary, economy and finance, etc. progress slowly or do not progress at all when working in isolation, they reach the intrinsic limits of their disciplinary development. In order to innovate these fields and produce significant transitions in their paradigms, it is indispensable that they communicate with one another, speaking the universal language of technology. Robotics, AI, IT, and bio-medical engineering can fecundate the methodology of basic research with the scientific and technological findings obtained through applied and translational research projects. These projects have the power to connect multiple disciplinary domains to develop new solutions and practices, which in turn can inspire new theoretical models, revolutionary practices, and groundbreaking ideas. In the Gulf Region, we are still missing a place in which this kind of translational research and this circulation of ideas and synergies is possible. We want to create such a place at UAE University.
This laboratory will be carefully equipped to serve the UAE national priorities and respond to the growing expectations of the society concerning the applications of automation and autonomous systems in education, cultural and entertainment industry, assistive technologies, healthcare, with a particular focus on the growing needs related to assistance (children, disabled and elderly people), security and control, training and supervision, and customer-service. Situated in the heart of UAE University, the laboratory will communicate with the rest of the scientific community. The laboratory will attract students, researchers, collaborations, and investments, representing a profitable resource for various structures, people, and interests, inside and outside our campus, becoming an example and a beacon for the whole region.
The Lab is devoted to share and provide the skills and knowledge to creatively implement a broad spectrum of AI and Robotics research methods and applications, including: Neuro-Rehabilitation System and Devices; Robotics Design, Modeling, and Control; Human-Robot Interactions;Social and Cognitive Robotics; Autonomous Systems; Robotics in Educations; Behaviors Analysis; etc.
